About the company
Elite Sailing are an RYA approved training centre providing a wide range of courses in sail, motor and theory for all different levels of experience. Based in Chatham, Medway, the company also has a number of satellite offices in London providing a convenient base for theory based courses.
Supporting the business
Elite Sailing needed a new website to solve some fairly major business problems. At Kent Web Host we’re keen to get to the heart of a business problem and after a few meetings we managed to focus the project to work towards meeting two fundamental objectives:
- Provide an easy to manage CMS (content management system) website so that new courses can easily be added and the rest of the website managed more effectively whilst maintaining the new design.
- To create an engaging website design that converts more visitors into paying customers.
Armed with our research, strategy and wireframe models we went about crafting a design that complements the look and feel of sea-based training whilst conveying appropriately and responsibly the business values of the company.
Our client was keen to use technology to make life easier for their customers and so when it became apparent that the potential for the new framework was not just about looks, but about building a sustainable solution, we were asked if the new website could link in to their booking system.
Elite Sailing use a bespoke custom booking system created by Steve Jarvis. This booking system provides the flexibility needed for taking bookings and payments whilst managing ‘boat-time’ for the courses.
Steve Jarvis worked on creating a widget to be used in the new website which would interrogate the booking system and return availability data based upon a users selection or on the course page being viewed:
Responsive web design
Integral to the brief of the project was to design a website that is responsive. Adjusting its proportions, images, text and layout according to the size of the device the website is being viewed on means that there is no need for zooming into tiny text. By utilising a mobile first strategy the new website caters for all users especially as mobiles account for more than 60% of website traffic.
